This Project is to conduct research on “Wealth Management of Family Enterprises” based on the study on the literatures of Ven. Master Hsing Yun 星雲大師” and the application of HeXie Management Theory. By reviewing the related literatures, this Project will firstly try to understand the concepts of wealth and economics of Humanistic Buddhism 人間佛教, as developed by Ven. Master Hsing Yun, and
HeXie Management Theory.

Abstract

This research intends to collect, summarize, and analyze the practice of Humanistic Buddhism in Hong Kong society concerning the fields of health and social care.

With the establishment of the concept of  “Humanistic Buddism”, Buddhism is now no longer a “Reclusive Buddhism” that stays on the margins. As the concept of “Life Buddhism” was first proposed by Master Taixu,  Master Yin Shun was inspired by Master Taixu and advocated the idea of “Humanistic Buddhism”. With the proposal of Humanistic Buddhism in the Hsing Yun Model by Fo Guang Shan, traditional Buddhism is bounded to modern society.

Around the world, Buddhist organizations have now made remarkable contributions to different charity activities including educational, medical, and relief. For example, Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Taiwan has founded two universities which are Fo Guang University and Nanhua University. FGS Taiwan also established the Cloud and Water Mobile Clinic to provide free medical services and has also founded a Compassion Foundation, which supports various social care services, such as disaster relief, rehabilitation & education, and promotion of Alzheimer’s disease prevention.

Being a part of China, Buddhism in Hong Kong has been rooted long and deep. However, Humanistic Buddhism in Hong Kong society is not as influential as it is in Taiwan comparatively. Such differences are believed to be caused by the different political, economic, social, and cultural backgrounds between Hong Kong and Taiwan. Since there is no specialized research in studying Humanistic Buddhism’s influence and contribution to Hong Kong society, this research aims at filling this gap in academia by reflecting on the current situation of Humanistic Buddhism practice in health and social care. To see whether there will be possible suggestions for the future development of Humanistic Buddhism in Hong Kong society provided based on the analysis.

The methodologies of this research are as follows:

Firstly, the literature review is conducted to review the history of Buddhist involvement in health and social care sectors, analyses and expounds on its previous contributions.

Then, this research plans to interview Buddhist leaders and practitioners from relevant sectors (e.g. psychologists, therapists, hospice care workers, etc.) to gather their practical experience. By combining the information from history and the practitioners, this research attempts to analyze the advantages and difficulties of the Humanistic Buddhism development in Hong Kong. 

Lastly, based on summarizing the analysis, to develop a feasible model of practice for the future development of Humanistic Buddhism.

In addition, to develop a workable model of practice, this research focuses on but is not limited to Humanistic Buddhism. This research may also attempt to compare the practical models of other religions to sort the valuable from the worthless, understand the shortcomings of existing practices and incorporate the strengths of the other models. The conclusion of this research may provide a reference for the development of Buddhism in Hong Kong. This model is not only a reference for the prospect for future development in Hong Kong but also a valuable reference for the development of Humanistic Buddhism in any metropolis similar to Hong Kong.

Project Introduction

Recently, we have faced unprecedented challenges. In the face of adversity, Buddhism provides us with an additional path for a better understanding of Buddhist thoughts. And good books – will be indispensable for us.

For many years, Master Hsing Yun of  Fo Guang Shan has made his best endeavor to promote Buddhism, Humanistic Buddhism, and emphasize the understanding and application of Buddha Dharma. Master Hsing Yun has already helped more people to understand Buddhism correctly and apply it to their daily lives through various methods and media. 

Based on this background and such a great honor to be supported by China Culture Foundation, this project aims to explore the works and thoughts of Master Hsing Yun thoroughly. With the support of the internet platforms, people are encouraged to further grasp the essentials of human Buddhism through reading the work of master Hsing Yun thus achieving a happy life by practicing the Buddhist doctrine. This practice will lead to the improvement of the quality of work and life. And by striving to apply Buddhist study to every aspect of our lives, we will continue to promote Buddhism, contribute to human society, and give joy to everyone’s lives.

Research Background

Recently, artificial intelligence has developed rapidly, providing a variety of new methods to promote the collection of digitized valuable Buddhist assets and primary information. For example –  canonical text, unearthed scrolls, and art artifacts. The digitalization of ancient and modern Buddhist treasures not only can help all living beings to understand the Dharma but also promotes Humanistic Buddhism. A new field of Buddhism called “Digital Humanistic Buddhism” was derived.

With this in mind, we plan to establish a “Digital Humanistic Buddhism” project. It aims to explore how to use advanced computer technology to promote Humanistic Buddhism principles and ideas innovatively so that people can apply Buddhist wisdom in their life.

Research Objective

The research project aims to: 

1. Set up several sub-projects to explore how to use innovative technology to develop various electronic tools for the convenience of Buddhists, scholars, and the general public. People may learn the essence of Humanistic Buddhism through different language media.

The sub-projects cover four major areas:

(1) Technology for translation of Buddhist scriptures

(2) Natural language processing and Buddhist literature

(3) Visualization of Buddhist Manuscripts

(4) Artificial intelligence and Buddhist art

2. To promote the interaction and integration of Humanistic Buddhism and information technology through various channels such as talks, workshops, seminars, and electronic media, so as to raise public awareness of the revitalization and application of traditional wisdom.

3. To lay the foundation for a larger research program on artificial intelligence and Humanistic Buddhism applications in the future.

Digital Humanistic Buddhism: A New Approach to Contemporary Buddhist Studies最先出现在The Centre for Humanistic Buddhism。

Entrepreneurs play an important role in economic development and new job creation. The mindset of entrepreneurs is the force behind their decisions and actions. The entrepreneurial mindset is driven by both nature (e.g., personality traits) and nurture (i.e., through learning and practices). It is also influenced by culture. In this proposed research, we will conduct literature research to identify connection between entrepreneurial mindset and culture in major Chinese schools of thought, i.e., Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. Key Chinese canonical texts such as Book of Changes and Dàodé Jīng (Laozi) will be researched to identify/ discover the innovation DNA and guiding principles. The finding will be integrated with contemporary practices in entrepreneurship, such as Lean Startup, Design Thinking, and Business Model Canvas, Customer Development Model. These practices are methodologies that can guide entrepreneurs through interactive processes in discovering, validating, and implementing innovative ideas into new businesses.

Most entrepreneurship books and cases are from the west. Such literature is useful for guiding entrepreneurs. However, we believe that an ambicultural approach to entrepreneurship can be more beneficial to practitioners in Hong Kong and Mainland China. Our research project plans to develop a manuscript of a book that is grounded in Chinese schools of thought and draws upon the best practices and knowledge from the entrepreneurship world. Field and case studies on non-profit organizations, existing business and/or new ventures in Hong Kong and Mainland China will be conducted to provide proper context for audiences of the proposed book.
